Making Tab Backed Curtains

Image
It takes a while for a new house to feel like home. For me, it is all the personal touches.   I finally got my sewing space set up so I can work again! This room is larger than my last one but it is in the basement and has NO windows! UGH! I am so thankful that the Bernina has so many wonderful lights on it or it would be a nightmare to sew in there. I am working on getting some better light and we will eventually open up the rest of the basement allowing natural light in. This is a lovely Waverly fabric I ordered online. Our new house has high ceilings and I needed 9 yards to make two curtains! 😲 I also bought 9 yards of plain curtain lining. It is actually very easy to make lined curtains. A lined curtain will last longer, hang better from the rod, and block light better. Plus, it just looks finished and professional. I chose to make the tabs out of the lining to conserve the more expensive fabric. I want to make a few throw pill...

Making Gift Baskets for Events

Image
Our church does a silent auction in the spring and I love that I can donate to a good cause and share about my oily business. I have also donated items to teacher appreciation events.  Here is the adorable metal basket I found at Hobby Lobby ON SALE!! I went in planning on using my 40% coupon on a basket but half off is even better, and I used my coupon on something else!  This basket is shallow with two birds perched in one corner. I love it and want to go back and get myself one.  I bought an inexpensive but large capacity diffuser from Amazon. I have the box with the cord and directions that I will send home with the winning bidder. The basket looks much nicer without it though.  Next, I added a hand crocheted cotton cloth. I make these all the time because  I can't sit still. I have to always be doing something. Which means I have a few hanging around the house. It looks special with the ribbon band around it.  I recycled a T...

Home Education Hope

Image
This is not a "how-to" post. It is a "you can do it" post. I am not an educational expert. I am a mom who managed to home-educate my three children.  And no one died! I'm not done yet. Two are in college and one is in high school (at home).  This home education thing is still a work in progress. Tailored to each child.  Disclaimer: Home education is not for everyone. There are plenty of families who shouldn't homeschool, and plenty who simply can't or don't want to. I am thankful for public education, and two of my children are planning on working in some capacity in the public education arena. I will say the beginning was daunting. My husband would say "if they fail, it's on you." I would think if they succeed it's on me too. :) He did support me, and they didn't fail. I did though. Quite a bit. There were times the kids succeeded in spite of me. I was an all in mom/teacher. The kids didn't need that though. I r...

Purification spray to keep the odors away!

Image
I made Purification spray today! It is just the right thing for sneakers, teen boy rooms, refreshing throw pillows, stale rooms and so much more! Here is how to make your own. Put 1 tsp baking soda in your bottle then fill nearly full with hot water from the tap. Put on the top and shake to dissolve the baking soda. Open back up and put in 10-20 drops of purification and shake again. My bottle was 4 oz so 15 drops was just right. I have made other room sprays with this same technique and different oils. Here is where I got my great bottles! Blue Spray Bottle

My Favorite Fluffy Face Formula

Image
I quit buying face cream a year ago. I never spent much on make up but I did invest in all kinds of anti-wrinkle, stop aging type creams.   Once I began paying attention to what was in those products I decided to make my own. I am still using the same jar nearly 11 months later and its 1/3 full. Over the year I have saved hundreds of dollars from using my little cream. Here is the basic recipe.   There are so many essential oils that are good for our skin. Some I didn't include are bergamot, clary sage, lavender, and sandalwood.  Carrier oil options are abundant! I only listed a few of the easiest to access.

Take Me Home Country Roads

Image
My son and I sneaked away for a few days to visit my family at their cattle ranch.  When we pull in the guard bull is on duty. This little calf is named Spanky.  He was so tiny when born he was the size of a dog.  He has been hand fed and raised and follows around my brother-in-law like a puppy. Don't let your guard down though, he will butt strangers and beller!  I was weeding under a rose bush when that ornery calf decided to let his presence be known. I'm glad I knew he was there or I would still be untangling myself from the climbing rose. A full day of sanding a go-cart makes for a dirty happy boy.  Then we put him to work stripping wallpaper.  This house was built in the 40's. The oldest layer of wallpaper is corn! It looks like rows and rows of corn on the cob. I wonder what the colors were like originally. Now it is dark brown with turquoise  highlights. He gets some free time to d...

Crazy Crochet Lady

Image
My hands must be busy. I type away at my computer, scribble in my notebooks, pin, stitch, rip, and crochet! I can face any day shuttling kids to a myriad of activities if my crochet bag is with me.  I cannot enjoy a movie at home without a crochet project.  When the movie is exciting my hands fly and stitches flow. There is comfort in the even rows, beautiful yarns and natural warmth of the project.  I tried to count how many items I had crocheted in my lifetime.  I don't have an accurate count, but I know there are dozens of hats, 20 or so scarves, three sweaters, maybe 30 afghans, plus little amigurumi dolls, bags, purses, potholders, trivets, and on and on...   Above is my current project.  It will be an afghan for my oldest.  She chose the yarn, I the pattern.  When I started it it went with me to the Dr. office, dance classes etc.  Now that it is getting cumberso...
